MATTERS OF URGENT PUBLIC IMPORTANCE
The member representing Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium Federal Constituency, Rt.Hon. Luke Onofiok in plenary of Tuesday, 17th March, 2020, moved a motion on the need for the Federal Government to postpone the national sports festival and other such engagements due to the seriousness of the threat of the coronavirus pandemic. The motion was seconded by Rep. Ndudi Elumelu.
Rep. Onofiok, in leading the debate, said the sports festival billed to hold in Edo State will have participants from all states of the federation. In the light of the severity of the coronavirus pandemic, he said, the Federal Government should cancel the event. He said it is a known fact that the Edo State Government has spent a tidy sum to renovate its facilities, and that the socioeconomic importance of sports development cannot be overemphasized. However, he said, like is being done the world over, there was the strong need to call off the event to ensure there is no opportunity for the coronavirus to affect numerous people, which will in turn affect many others in different parts of the country.
The Speaker Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila noted that to do anything contrary to the prayer of the motion would be irresponsible as is being done in even more technically advanced societies. The motion was voted on and adopted. The Speaker then asked the chairman of the House Committee onLegislative Compliance to communicate the resolution of the House on the matter to the ministers of health and sports by Wednesday, March 18, 2020 as the scheduled date for the commencement of the sports festival is fast approaching.
